Nach einem schwierigen Qualifying zeigten Gehrsitz und seine Teamkollegen eine starke fahrerische Leistung und bewiesen das Potenzial des neuen McLaren 720 S GT3 EVO-Gesamtpakets.

Positive Tendenz in den freien Trainings: Bereits in den Vorbereitungen auf das 6-Stunden-Rennen deutete sich die Konkurrenzfähigkeit an. Finn Gehrsitz, der nach einer erfolgreichen Vorsaison auf Lexus (inklusive zweier Hyper-Poles) zum Team Garage 59 gewechselt war, fand sich schnell in der neuen Umgebung zurecht. Herausforderungen im Qualifying und Aufholjagd im Rennen: Das Qualifying übernahm Alexander West. Aufgrund einer Berührung auf der Strecke und einer gestrichenen Zeit wegen Track-Limits wurde der Einzug in die Hyper-Pole knapp verpasst. Mit Startplatz 16 war die Ausgangslage für das Rennen anspruchsvoll, eröffnete dem Team jedoch taktische Möglichkeiten für eine Aufholjagd.

Alexander West erwischte einen sauberen Rennstart und konnte bereits in der Anfangsphase Plätze gutmachen. Er übergab das Fahrzeug auf Position 9 an Benjamin Goethe, der den Aufwärtstrend mit einem starken Stint fortsetzte, bevor Finn Gehrsitz das Cockpit übernahm.

Strategischer Poker bei wechselhaftem Wetter: In der zweiten Rennhälfte sorgte die unsichere Wetterlage für eine strategische Herausforderung. In der Hoffnung auf einsetzenden Regen entschied sich das Team bei Gehrsitz' Boxenstopp gegen einen kompletten Reifenwechsel, um Zeit zu sparen und für nasse Bedingungen gerüstet zu sein. Da der Regen ausblieb, musste Gehrsitz seinen Stint auf gebrauchten Slicks absolvieren, während die direkte Konkurrenz auf frischen Reifen unterwegs war.

Trotz des daraus resultierenden Pace-Nachteils hielt Gehrsitz den Anschluss und übergab das Auto für den Schlusssprint an Benjamin Goethe, der mit frischen Reifen den siebten Platz sicherte.

Obwohl uns das Pech im Qualifying eine bessere Ausgangsposition gekostet hat, bin ich mit der Aufholjagd und dem siebten Platz zufrieden. IMOLA, ITALY – At the season opener of the 2026 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) in Imola, Italy, Finn Gehrsitz and Team "Garage 59" secured a solid seventh-place finish in the highly competitive LMGT3 class.

After a difficult qualifying session, Gehrsitz and his teammates delivered a strong driving performance and demonstrated the potential of the new McLaren 720 S GT3 EVO package.

Hoping for rain to set in, the team decided against a full tire change during Gehrsitz’s pit stop to save time and be prepared for wet conditions. Since the rain never came, Gehrsitz had to complete his stint on used slicks, while his direct competitors were on fresh tires.

Despite the resulting pace disadvantage, Gehrsitz kept up with the field and handed the car over to Benjamin Goethe for the final sprint, who secured seventh place on fresh tires.
